Carpentry
Oakcrest and Absegami High School are offering a Career Technical Education (CTE) pre apprenticeship program by partnering with the carpenters union . Students who successfully complete three years of the GEHRHSD carpentry courses listed below have a direct pathway into the carpenters’ union’s full apprenticeship program . For union membership, in addition to the required course work, students must pass a skills test, pass a drug screening and physical requirement assessment. This opportunity can be available to Cedar Creek students in the classes of 2023 and beyond if they wish to attend either Oakcrest or Absegami High School as a full time student. Interested students should see their guidance counselor for information, requirements, and paperwork. Firefighter 1 is the first level of Firefighter training that provides entry-level skills in preparation as a Firefighter, emergency responder or volunteer. This level introduces the basics of nationally recognized fire fighting techniques. Methods of instruction will include a combination of classroom theory and skill oriented “hands-on” participation. Student performance will be evaluated throughout the course including both written and practical assessments. This course is for general knowledge and personal interest. To seek full certification, some weekend and evening hours and testing must be completed at the Atlantic County Fire Training Center. 5 Credits Grades 9-12: Intro to Carpentry OHS AHS Residential Carpentry is the second level course in wood technology. It provides students with measurement, print reading and drawing, estimating, and trade safety. Students will become familiar with layout procedures and the materials used in construction. Each unit of study is followed by a “hands on” completion project that will encompass the lessons of that unit. Students will become proficient in assembling and installing various types of residential construction components. Heavy machines will be used in this Grades 10-12: Residential Carpentry OHS AHS
course. 5 Credits Prerequisite: Teacher recommendation and/or 80 or above in Intro to Carpentry.
