Homeland Security & Public Safety Magnet Course Progression

Grade 11: Honors Law and Criminology This course provides the student with an overall understanding of both the American Criminal Justice System and the science of Criminology. During the first part of the course, study will be focused on the three components of the Criminal Justice System: Law Enforcement, The Courts and the Penal System. The second part of the course will feature the history of the science of criminal profiling and the five phases of the criminal profiling process. Using case studies of various serial killers, students will develop and practice the skills needed to create a criminal profile. 5 Credits Prerequisite: Successful Completion of Homeland Security I Grade 12: Honors Homeland Security II This course reviews (Homeland Security I) the definitions and concepts of terrorism and introduces students to more complex issues surrounding the institutions, policies and procedures relevant to the security of the United States. Students will examine federal, state, and local governmental agencies that work to protect our country from terrorism, natural disasters, and man-made catastrophes. Students will also be introduced to the ever advancing forms of technology used by our Homeland Security apparatus to prevent and respond to events that are of national concern. A special emphasis will be placed on cyber technologies, including our national infrastructure and use of Geographic Information System (GIS) by our Homeland Security entities. 5 Credits Prerequisite: Successful Completion of Homeland Security I
