H.A.R.P. (HELPING AUTISM REACH its POTENTIAL) A FUNCTIONAL LIFE SKILLS PROGRAM Students in the pull-out replacement resource program are placed in a special education class with a special education teacher. Students in this setting follow the general education curriculum. Modifications and adaptations are provided by the special education teacher as determined by each student’s IEP. Class size is limited to allow for more individualized instruction. Course descriptions for POR courses can be found in the corresponding department’s section of this book. Course descriptions that are unique to the POR setting are listed below: AHS REACH program is designed to enable students with mild to moderate cognitive limitations to acquire academic and functional skills necessary for employment (in both supported and/or non supported settings) and independent living. The program curriculum promotes vocational competencies for those students who cannot incidentally learn these skills. Instruction of these skills is infused into daily content area material rather than being taught as separate instructional units. Program components will include direct instruction in English, Reading, Math, Social Studies, Science, Problem Solving, and Vocational Preparation. Course descriptions for the R.E.A.C.H. Program can be found in the corresponding department’s section of this book. Course descriptions that are unique to the REACH Program are listed below: ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE This course allows students to study blended concepts of physics, chemistry and environmental science that occur in natural places. This course focuses on chemical reactions and processes that occur in the environment and its impact on humanity. Students will explore scientific processes through investigation and observation that integrate chemical reactions and chemical bonding with impacts on environment and energy resources.
