ML Lab is offered to students identified as eligible for ESL services. The second language acquisition focus will be on cognitive academic learning proficiency skills (CALPS) in order to help the student successfully acquire the skills needed to make a smooth transition to mainstream classes. Student instruction provides for integrated English Language Development (ELD) standards based on grade-level bands for World Language (WL) standards scaffolded by student’s English language proficiency level to meet the appropriate WL proficiency targets. Eligible students may be able to use this course to meet the requirements for WL credits. MULTILINGUAL LEARNERS LAB I-IV Grades 9-12, 5 Credits In accordance with the WIDA ELP Standards, Multilingual Learners 1, 2, 3 and 4 will center on the language skills needed and used by Multilingual Learners to succeed in high school coursework, within the school community and society at large. Students will receive instruction in reading, speaking, listening, and writing as outlined in the World-Class Instructional Design and Assessment (WIDA) standards and in conjunction with the grade level NJ Student Learning Standards for ELA scaffolded by student’s English language proficiency level. This course meets the requirement for English Language Arts credits towards graduation. MULTILINGUAL LEARNERS EDUCATION I-IV Grades 9-12, 5 Credits

READING FOR MULTILINGUAL LEARNERS Grades 9-12, 5 Credits

Reading for ML introduces and reinforces literacy skills development for second language students as they progress through the stages of language acquisition. The course involves structured class activities as well as group and individual work with the goal of sequential skill development, increases in overall reading level, and improved performance on state-mandated assessments. Modified and differentiated instruction is also incorporated into daily lessons to meet the individual needs of students.
