HONORS CONTEMPORARY LITERATURE Grades 11-12, 5 Credits
This English course explores the tenets of rhetoric and composition in a rigorous program designed to engage students in becoming skilled readers and writers with specific emphasis on invention, drafting, and revision techniques. Peer feedback, collaboration, and dialogue will drive instruction and classroom discussion. Students will read complex, relevant texts, in fiction and nonfiction, with focus on theme, tone, purpose, mode, and intent. This course is open to all students who meet the prerequisites. The course will provide a challenging, fast-paced survey of rhetorical situations and analysis with emphasis on audience, purpose and message. Non fiction reading includes memoir from American Presidents, Trevor Noah and Malala Yousafzai. This course could also be taken for dual credit through Atlantic Cape Community College and can be used as an English course in the Early College Program. Prerequisite: Teacher recommendation and/or a 90 or above in current College Prep English course. Prerequisite: Teacher recommendation and/or a 90 or above in current College Prep English course. This class is designed for highly motivated students who will be challenged in the areas of reading, writing, speaking, viewing, and using technology. Students will explore themes in literature from the 20th century through various media and genres. To accent the course description provided above, historical, political, and literary texts chosen for the course provide a strong foundation for the study of future Advanced Placement courses in the humanities that include English Language, American Literature, United States History, and Psychology.
