This course in English Literature and Composition is a rigorous program that engages students in the careful reading and analysis of a variety of literary works drawn from various genres, periods, and cultures. Through the close and active reading of representative texts, students will deepen their understanding of the writer’s style and use of language. Writing assignments will focus on the critical analysis of literature. The ultimate goal of the course is to have students learn how to experience, interpret, and evaluate literature. AP ENGLISH LITERATURE and COMPOSITION Prerequisites: Teacher recommendation and/or a 90 or above in current College Prep English course or an 80 or above in current Honors English course. Grades 11-12, 5 Credits This course in English Language and Composition is a rigorous program that engages students in becoming skilled readers and writers. The ultimate goal of the course is to enable students to read complex texts with understanding, to write effectively for a variety of purposes, and to develop an awareness of the connection between a writer's purpose/theme and the rhetorical strategies he/she employs to achieve this goal. AP ENGLISH LANGUAGE and COMPOSITION Prerequisites: Teacher recommendation and/or a 90 or above in current College Prep English course or an 80 or above in current Honors English course. Grades 11-12, 5 Credits This course is designed to blend composition & literature into a cohesive whole as students write critical & comparative analyses of selected literature. Students will receive advanced instruction in writing for a variety of purposes & audiences for the explicit purpose of preparation for higher education reading and writing. The course highlights careful reading and analysis of a variety of literary works drawn from various genres, periods, and cultures. Through the close and active reading of representative texts, students will deepen their understanding of the writer’s style and use of language. Long form fiction spans Bronte to Ellison, Dickens to Conrad, Morrison and Walker to Arthur Miller and Tennessee Williams. MIDNIGHT LITERATURE Grades 11-12, 5 Credits Prerequisite: Teacher recommendation and/or a 90 or above in current College Prep English course.
